Career Happiness
I am Successful, So Why am I Unhappy with My Career?
As with most things in life, our values and interests can evolve over time. As a result, our desire to stay with the career or position we once were vying for may also change over time as well. The longer we stay in a position we are dissatisfied with and ignore our feelings of unhappiness, the harder it may be to transition to something that can lead us towards greater potential for joy. We may convince ourselves that if we work harder, things will change. On the flip side, we may allow self-doubt to seep in and take hold of our confidence to move in a different direction. The accumulating effects of being unhappy in a career can be significant, both personally and professionally.
Physical health
Stress, especially chronic stress, due to work can exacerbate already existing medical conditions or lead to a number of physical health problems such as heart disease. It can also weaken the immune system, making us more susceptible to illness.
Mental health
Ignoring or avoiding our unhappiness can cause our problems to grow. We may experience difficulty concentrating and making decisions. Additionally, we are more likely to experience burnout, depression and anxiety and increase the likelihood of developing a mental health condition such as a mood disorder.
Personal relationships:
Productivity
Being unhappy with work can impact how productive and engaged we are in our work. We may also be more prone to making mistakes. Consequently, it can affect our work product and level of achievement.
Career development
The longer we stay in an unhappy career or position, the more stuck we can feel. When we are disengaged, we may be less likely to seek out new opportunities or take on new challenges, which can hinder our professional development and growth.
There are many reasons why you might be unhappy in your career or position. Some of the most common reasons include:
Lack of fulfillment in the work
If you're not gaining satisfaction and have lost interest in the work you're doing, it's going to be difficult to be happy and motivated.
Lack of challenge
If your work is too easy or doesn't challenge you intellectually, you may become bored and restless. This can lead to feelings of dissatisfaction and unhappiness.
Lack of opportunities for advancement
If you feel like you're stuck in a dead-end position, it's natural to feel unhappy. This is especially true if you have ambitious career goals.
Poor work-life balance
Having a position that demands too much of your time and energy, is unpredictable, and/or requires long hours, it can be difficult to maintain a healthy work-life balance. This can lead to stress, burnout, and unhappiness.
Toxic work environment
If you work in a toxic work environment, it's going to be difficult to thrive. This is especially true if you're being bullied, harassed, or discriminated against.
Other important reasons why you might be unhappy in your career or position include:
- Feeling undervalued or underpaid.
- Having a bad relationship with your mentor, manager or coworkers.
- Not being able to use your skills and talents to the fullest.
- Working in a job that is not aligned with your standards or values.
- Feeling like you’re not making a difference in the world.
What Can I Do If I’m Unhappy with Work
If you're unhappy in your career or position, it's important to identify the root cause of your dissatisfaction. Once you know what's causing your unhappiness, you can start to develop a plan to make a change. This will involve reevaluating what matters most to you (your values in life) and what brings you the greatest joy.
Here are some tips for dealing with unhappiness in a career or position:
Identify the sources of your unhappiness
What are the specific things about your work or position that are making you unhappy? Once you know what the problems are, you can start to develop solutions.
Talk with a trusted support
If you feel comfortable doing so, talk to a mentor, supervisor or partner about your concerns. They may be able to offer insights and/or facilitate changes that would allow you to transition away from what you are dissatisfied with.
Explore new opportunities within your company or business
If your current position isn't a good fit for you or if you are not happy with your business direction, see if there are other opportunities available within your company that might be a better match or allow you to advance your business.
Ask questions and start exploring
What do you value in life? What do you truly enjoy? Are your actions aligned with your values and interests? Personal reflection can help you gain clarity on what matters most to you and allow you to rethink and change what is making you unhappy.
Networking and connecting with people can allow you to gain greater perspective. It can also help you learn about new opportunities, gain new ideas and make connections with potential partners.
Create options
Remember, you don't have to stay in a job that's making you unhappy. There are other options available to you. Creating options for yourself allows you to move from feeling stuck to unstuck, as building options increases the level of mobility and choices you can decide from.
Cultivate new experiences
Change simply cannot occur without change, and if you want to feel differently—then change must also occur. However, it can be hard to know where to start, especially if the change we want is quite a big shift. Taking small, persistent steps towards the changes you want to make makes things much more manageable, and small changes over time create bigger changes and cultivate new experiences in our lives.
Take care of yourself.
It's important to take care of your physical and mental health when you're unhappy at work. Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly. Don’t forget that asking for help is natural and normal. You may also want to consider talking to a therapist or counselor.
How Can Therapy Help Me Find Fulfillment in Work?
A psychologist can provide support, facilitate introspection and help you move towards options that would increase your level of fulfillment by:
Helping you align your interests, values, and strengths with opportunities
When you participate in activities, such as work, that are not aligned with what matters most to you, then it is hard to feel happy and fulfilled. It’s like forcing a round peg into a square hole; It just doesn’t fit. It’s important to note that we all will be dissatisfied with our work from time to time; however, it may be time for us to rethink our position if we are dissatisfied most of the time. Maybe it’s not the work itself, but the environment, colleagues, etc. that don’t align with your values and as a result keeps you feeling unhappy. Understanding and identifying your values, interests and strengths is one of the first steps. Next steps include taking measures to align your career with these values so can help you move closer to how you want to feel.
Be mindful of your thoughts and beliefs about yourself and your career.
Many people who are unhappy with their career choices have thoughts and beliefs about themselves, their abilities, or the job aspect that may not be helpful. For example, worrying about possible outcomes and being self-critical can hinder you from taking steps to explore possibilities and expand your options.
Improving their coping skills and resilience
A psychologist can teach people coping skills to help them effectively manage the stress and anxiety that can come with considering a career or position change. They can also help people to develop resilience, so that they can bounce back from setbacks and challenges.
Providing support and guidance throughout the career change process
A psychologist can provide ongoing support and guidance as people navigate change. This can include helping you
- Manage and cope with feelings that can prevent you from becoming “unstuck.”
- A psychologist might help someone who is feeling overwhelmed by the prospect of making a change to develop a step-by-step plan and break the process down into smaller, more manageable tasks.
If you are unhappy in your career, talking to a professional can be a safe and secure way to explore, gain professional support and guidance you need to make a change.
