Transform Your Story: Overcome
Feelings of Sadness
What is The Purpose of Sadness?
Sadness is a basic emotion that is universal and innate, meaning that all humans experience sadness. When we lose someone important in our life, face rejection, or suffer from health issues, it is normal for us to feel sorrow, despair, and heartache. Although all these healthy feelings are natural to have, it can still be quite uncomfortable and painful to experience. Like a painful cut we must endure on our body until it heals, our “emotional cuts” also hurt. Sadness can manifest itself in a number of ways, including:
- Physical symptoms: Sadness can cause physical symptoms such as fatigue, loss of appetite, and difficulty sleeping.
- Emotional symptoms: Sadness can also cause emotional symptoms such as feeling down, hopeless, and unmotivated.
- Behavioral symptoms: Sadness can also cause behavioral symptoms such as social withdrawal, isolation, and changes in eating or sleeping habits.
We live in a society that views sadness as being “bad.” So much so, that tolerating it can be a challenge. To avoid feeling sad, many people attempt to push it away or bottle it up. In fact, our society often sends straightforward messages to “don’t be sad,” “stop feeling that way, it’s ok” or “don’t cry.” But how is this possible? How is being betrayed by a friend ok? -- How could such an experience not naturally make us sad?
When something doesn’t feel good, it’s usually a signal for us to pay attention and assess what our body is trying to communicate to us. It’s a rather purposeful and smart system that attempts to keep us safe and thriving. If we allow ourselves to feel our emotions, then we can learn why something hurts us so much and find ways to resolve it. Suppressing sadness usually makes it worse.
Reasons High Achievers Experience Sadness
There’s a misconception that high achievers “have nothing to be sad about,” but as with anyone else in this world they also experience sadness. Many high achievers find that their status either magnifies their problems or creates additional problems, which few understand or empathize with. This often leads to isolation, loneliness, anxiety and sadness. The challenges they encounter are often compounded by guilt and embarrassment, as they suffer from stigmas and the false perception that success is supposed to make you happier. However, there is no amount of external attainment that exonerates us from life's struggle and varying pain we will feel in life. It cannot replace our internal desire for love, connection, appreciation, acceptance, and emotional wellness.
Here are some reasons why high achievers might struggle with sadness:
Perfectionism
Top achievers often set very high standards for themselves, and they may feel disappointed or even devastated if they don't meet those standards. This can lead to feelings of sadness, self-doubt, and worthlessness.
Imposter syndrome
Imposter syndrome is a feeling of inadequacy that can affect high achievers despite their accomplishments. They may feel like they don't deserve their success, and they may worry that they will be exposed as a fraud. This can lead to feelings of anxiety, stress, and sadness.
Burnout
High achievers often work long hours and put a lot of pressure on themselves to succeed. This can lead to burnout, which is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. Burnout can cause feelings of sadness, fatigue, and hopelessness.
Loneliness
High achievers may be isolated from others because they feel the pressure to focus on achieving (e.g., work or money). They may not have time for friends, family, or hobbies, and they may feel like they don't have anyone to truly understand them. This can lead to feelings of sadness, loneliness, and emptiness.
Loss
High achievers are not immune to loss, and they may experience sadness when they lose a loved one, a job, or a goal. The grieving process can be difficult for anyone, but it can be especially challenging for high achievers who are used to being in control.
How to Cope with Sadness?
Accepting that sadness is part of our human experience is the first step to coping with sadness. Additionally, remember that sadness serves a purpose. Here are a few ways sadness can benefit us:
It can motivate you to change
Sadness can motivate us to make positive changes in our lives. When we are feeling sad, we may be more likely to reflect on our lives and to make changes that will bring greater fulfillment in life.
It helps you to connect with others
When you share your sadness with others, you feel less alone, and you can receive support from those who care about you. Furthermore, in processing and sharing your sadness, you learn more about yourself and that can allow you to connect with others who share similar values in life.
It helps you to process loss
When we experience the death of a loved one, the end of a relationship, the loss of a job or the loss of health, we naturally experience sadness. This process of sadness allows us to process our grief and pave the way for new experiences.
It can help you gain perspective
When we experience and reflect on our sadness, it can help us see our lives with greater balance and clarity. For example, it may allow you to appreciate certain people and things in your life. It can also make us reevaluate our priorities and focus on what is truly important to us.
Here are some tips for coping with sadness:
Allow yourself to feel your emotions
It is important to allow yourself to feel your emotions, even when they feel uncomfortable or painful. Pain is your body’s signal for attention and care. Pushing away or bottling up your emotions can make them worse.
Talk to someone you trust
Talking to someone you trust about how you are feeling can help you make sense of and deal with your emotions in a productive way.
Do something you enjoy
Doing something you enjoy can help to lift your spirits and to take your mind off of your sadness for a moment. This is different from repressing your sadness. For example, if you just got a divorce, it is perfectly normal to feel sad—even if you wanted the divorce. It will take time to metabolize your sadness, while you carve out new experiences in our life.
Get some exercise
Research shows that when we exercise, our bodies release chemicals that help to relax us and improve our mood. Specifically, exercise increases endorphins, which are “feel good” hormones that have mood-boosting effects. Additionally, exercise can also help to reduce stress levels by releasing tension and anxiety.
Get enough sleep
When you are well-rested, you are better able to cope with stress and difficult emotions. Sleep is essential for good health, and it plays a role in many important bodily functions, including removing toxins from the brain, fighting off infection, repairing cells, regulating stress hormones, and reducing stress and anxiety.
Eat healthy foods
Certain foods can boost your mood, give you more energy, and improve your overall well-being.
Practice relaxation techniques
Relaxation techniques, such as yoga, meditation, or deep breathing, can help to calm your mind and body and improve your mood.
Seek professional help
If you are feeling sad for an extended period of time, or if your sadness is interfering with your ability to function, it is important to seek professional help. A therapist can help you to understand your sadness and to develop healthy coping mechanisms.
