Transform Your Story: Overcome
Feelings of Regret

Our ability to think about ourselves over the duration of our lives and to reflect on the decisions we’ve made or could have made can oftentimes leave us with regret. Regret is a self-focused experience that involves acknowledging and evaluating our actions or in-actions. It is a natural and healthy response we all inevitably experience. Afterall, regret can motivate us to change the behavior(s) that causes us distress and find greater satisfaction in our lives.

There are times when our regrets are fleeting. For example, when we do or don’t do something (e.g., telling a joke that didn’t get the response we wanted) that’s embarrassing. However, there are other times when regret persists for a longer period. The types of regrets that likely elicit stronger negative feelings and last longer tend to be about the things we didn’t do. Keep reading to learn about regret and how you can resolve feelings of regret in your life

What is Regret?

Regret is a complex emotion that involves self-blame and is often associated with feelings of sadness, disappointment, and guilt. It can be caused by a variety of factors, including:

Making a mistake

Regret can be caused by making a mistake that we later come to regret. This could be something as small as saying the wrong thing to someone, or something as big as making a bad decision that has a negative impact on our lives.

Not taking action

Regret can also be caused by not taking action soon enough or when we had the chance. This could be something as simple as not asking someone out on a date, spending more time with our loved ones, or something as big not jumping on great opportunities.

Losing something

Regret can also be caused by losing something that we value. This could be a person, a possession, or even a moment in time.

Why do High Achievers have Regret?

Top achievers who are publicly successful, but privately unfulfilled, likely struggle with regrets. While the specific regrets can vary among high achievers, there appears to be common reasons high achievers may have regrets:

Not taking more risks

Top achievers may be risk-averse because they are afraid of possible failure, including losing what they have worked so hard to attain. While great risk comes with great reward, it also can come with great consequences. Consequently, high achievers may be hesitant to take on new opportunities and play it safe.

Not spending enough time with loved ones

High achievers are often so focused on their work that they may neglect relationships with their loved ones. This can lead to conflicts in relationships as well as feelings of regret, especially as they get older.

Not taking care of their health

High achievers are often so focused on their work that they may neglect their health and well-being. This can lead to health problems later in life.

Not following their passion

High achievers may sometimes pursue careers that they are not passionate about because they believe that it is the best way to achieve success. However, this can lead to feelings of regret later in life, as they may realize that they have not been living their true lives.

Not changing fast enough

It is easier to contemplate change than to take action in the moment. However, everything around us is constantly evolving and changing, and we need to evolve and adapt with our surroundings if we want to thrive.

Not enjoying the present moment

Top achievers may frequently function in survival mode. To some extent, it energizes them towards success. But it may also have them ruminating about things that they have done in the past and constantly worrying about what they need to be doing in the future. As a result, they may not be able to fully appreciate being in the current moment with the people they are with or the things they’ve accomplished.

How do High Achievers Resolve Their Regrets?

Regret can be a challenging emotion to deal with, but it is important to remember that it is a normal human emotion. Everyone experiences regret at some point in their lives, and it can motivate us to improve our situation. It is important for high achievers to be aware of the potential for regret and to take steps to mitigate it. This may involve:

Acknowledge your feelings

The “deathbed” questions–if you were to imagine yourself on your deathbed, what would you reflect on? Are there things you would have done differently? These thoughts and images may elicit strong emotions. It is easy to ignore or put off our thoughts and feelings of regret, considering the feelings of regret can be quite uncomfortable and downright daunting. However, ignoring our feelings of regret can only make it worse and cause greater pain in the long run.

Reflect on your actions

Take some time to reflect on your actions and to think about why you made the choices that you did. This can help you to understand your regret and to learn from your mistakes.

Practice self-compassion and forgive yourself

Remember that everyone makes mistakes, and that it is never too late to change your course. Be kind to yourself and forgive yourself for your mistakes by

  • Setting realistic expectations that mistakes and failures are part of life and necessary for success.
  • Avoid looking back at your actions in a judgmental or disapproving way.
  • Focus on what you can do now and use previous mistakes to inform you of your plan to move forward.

Focus on the present moment

Don't dwell on the past or worry about the future. Instead, focus on the present and on living your life in the moment.

Align to your values

Identify and align with your values in life, rather than doing something you feel you “should” be doing or not doing. Take small actionable steps towards the things that bring you the greatest fulfillment.

Talk to someone you trust

If you are struggling to deal with regret, talk to a friend, family member, therapist, or counselor who can understand your concerns and help you to process your feelings and cope.
