Transform Your Story: Stop
Overthinking It
Why Do People Overthink Things?
You're probably overthinking something if you find yourself going in circles with your thoughts. This means you're replaying the same idea without any progress or a clear answer. Instead of helpful problem-solving, it's just mental busywork that gets you nowhere. In fact, overthinking often leads to strong emotions like worry, regret or sadness.
We tend to overthink when we are trying to find a solution to problems or concerns we have in life. Is this career the perfect fit? What does that person think of me? How can I manage my finances better? The irony is, this excessive pondering can actually hinder our ability to find solutions and make decisions. Overthinking can actually breed self-doubt.
Why are High Achievers Prone to Overthinking?
High achievers are prone to overthinking for a few reasons, often stemming from the very traits that drive their success:
High standards and perfectionism
Their desire for excellence can morph into a need for everything to be perfect. This can lead to endlessly analyzing decisions, replaying mistakes, and fearing any outcome that falls short of their ideal.
Fear of failing
Need for control
High achievers often thrive on being in control. Overthinking can be a way of trying to mentally control situations and anticipate any potential problems before they arise.
Their focus on goals and ambitions can lead them to dwell on what's next. They might overthink future steps, potential roadblocks, and various strategies, hindering their ability to be present and act.
Future-oriented thinking
Some high achievers experience anxiety that can manifest as overthinking. They might worry excessively, ruminate on negative possibilities, and struggle to let go of anxieties.
High-functioning anxiety
Their focus on goals and ambitions can lead them to dwell on what's next. They might overthink future steps, potential roadblocks, and various strategies, hindering their ability to be present and act.
How to Stop Overthinking
Overthinking is unhelpful and causes distress, but there are steps you can take to quiet the mental chatter and take back control. Here are some approaches to consider:
Recognize the signs
The first step is awareness and catching yourself in the act. Are you replaying the same scenario in your head with no progress? Are you dwelling on past mistakes or future anxieties? If so, you're probably overthinking.
Interrupt the overthinking
Once you recognize you're overthinking, interrupt the pattern. Practice deep breathing and bring your focus to the present moment.
Don’t believe everything you think
Notice unhelpful thoughts for what they are. Just because we think something, doesn’t make it true and it doesn’t define us.
Schedule "think time"
This might sound counterintuitive, but allotting a specific time each day to address your problem can be surprisingly effective. Set a timer for 15-20 minutes and let yourself productively manage your problem during that designated period. The idea is to contain your worries and prevent them from taking over your entire day. Once the timer goes off, let go of those thoughts until your next worry session.
Focus on solutions
Instead of endlessly replaying the problem, shift your focus to solutions. Can you brainstorm potential answers? Write down actionable steps you can take to move forward.
Take action
Sometimes the best way to break free from overthinking is to simply take action, even if it's a microstep. Doing something, anything, can interrupt the cycle of rumination and get you moving in a positive direction.
Seek support
If overthinking is significantly impacting your daily life or causing emotional distress, consider seeking professional help from a mental health professional. They can equip you with additional tools and strategies for managing overthinking and improving your overall well-being.
