Transform Your Story: Overcome
Insecurities

Reasons High Achievers Feel Insecure

Some of the most common insecurities that they may experience include:

Imposter syndrome

This experience happens when people feel that they are not as good as they appear, and that they are going to be found out as a fraud.

Perfectionism

High achievers often set unrealistic standards for themselves, which can lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt.

Fear of failure

High achievers are often afraid of failure, and this fear can paralyze them and prevent them from taking risks and building confidence.

Comparison to others

High achievers frequently compare themselves to others, which can ultimately lead to feelings of inadequacy and insecurity.

Low self-esteem

High achievers who are successful, but still feel unsatisfied with where they are in life may be experiencing insecurity. They often struggle with a sense of inadequacy, which stems from negative life experiences or critical messages they’ve heard which they have internalized. To deal with such distressing assumptions, they relentlessly strive to be outstanding “at all costs.” This unbalanced approach tends to impact their personal wellness, relationships, and other important areas in their lives. Because high achievers focus more on others' perception, they tend to need constant validation in the form of approval, affirmation or attainment to feel better about themselves and their situation. However, their feelings of satisfaction and happiness may be short-lived because they rely too heavily on external validation to feel good about themselves. Keep reading to learn more about insecurity.

The reality is insecurity is an innate human emotion that everyone experiences. Even the most seemingly confident people all struggle with insecurity. We just can’t avoid it. For one, life is inherently insecure. We are all born into a world that is constantly changing, and we can never be sure what the future holds. Insecurity has a way of affecting us in a variety of ways and at differing levels.

Comparison to others

We live in a society that is constantly bombarding us with images and messages of the ideal life. This can lead to us comparing ourselves to others and feeling insecure about our own appearance, abilities, or accomplishments.

Appearance

Many people feel insecure about how they look, including their weight, height, skin, hair, or overall attractiveness. Insecurity about appearance is a common experience that can manifest in a variety of ways. Some of the most common signs of insecurity about appearance include being overly critical of your appearance, constantly comparing yourself to others, avoiding social situations because you're worried about how you look, dieting or exercising excessively, using makeup or other cosmetic products/services to cover up your perceived flaws, or having negative thoughts about your body.

Relationships

Some people feel insecure in their relationships, whether it be with their partner, friends, or family. Insecurity in relationships can be seen in a variety of ways. Examples of insecurity in relationships include:

  • Constantly comparing yourself to your partner's ex.
  • Being overly jealous of your partner's friends or family.
  • Needing constant reassurance from your partner that they love you.
  • Doubting your partner's commitment to the relationship.
  • Being afraid of being abandoned or rejected.
  • Feeling like you're not good enough for your partner.

There are many reasons why people feel insecure in their connections with others. Some of the most common causes include negative experiences in past relationships. If you've been hurt or betrayed in past relationships, it's likely that you'll carry some of that baggage into your new relationships. This can lead to feelings of insecurity, even if your current partner is nothing like your ex.

Additionally, low self-esteem can lead to problems with creating or maintaining relationships. If you don't feel good about yourself, it's likely that you'll also feel insecure with others. This is because you are consumed with your flaws and shortcomings. Consequently, your interactions with others become naturally limited and less interesting. We tend to gravitate to people who allow us to see their strengths and flaws because they are more relatable and authentic. They’re not trying to be perfect, and they make mistakes, just like everyone else.

Comparing our relationships with others contributes to insecurity and instability in relationships. We are constantly exposed to advertisements, movies, and social media images and content about how our relationships should be. When we compare our own experiences to these images or ideas, we may feel like our relationships are not good enough. This unrealistic expectation can keep us constantly dissatisfied.

Finally, communication problems can be extremely stressful in a relationship. If you're not able to communicate effectively with your partner, it's likely that you'll feel insecure in the relationship. When you have difficulty sharing your thoughts and feelings with your partner, it can lead to misunderstandings and resentment.

Career

Some people feel insecure about their career, whether it be their job performance, their ability to get ahead, or their overall job satisfaction. You may feel the pressure to achieve more or are constantly worried about losing all that that you have earned.

Intelligence

As intelligent as you are, you may always feel like it's not enough. Consequently, you may avoid being in situations where you are challenged, or you may be afraid to ask questions for fear of how people may perceive you. Doubting your ability to learn new things can block you from pursuing opportunities and self-fulfillment.

Self-worth

Despite appearing confident, you may still feel insecure about who you are, whether it be your overall value as a person or your ability to achieve your goals. Being overly critical of yourself and focusing on your perceived flaws will keep you worried about being rejected.

When is Insecurity Problematic?

Insecurity is problematic when it interferes with our lives and our ability to cultivate relationships and fulfilling experiences. Most of us try to fix our insecurities through external solutions, but there’s no amount of external attainment that can resolve it.

Insecurity can often be traced back to negative experiences in childhood or adolescence. People who have experienced trauma may have difficulty trusting others and feeling secure in themselves. This could include being bullied, rejected, or criticized. These experiences can lead to a belief that we are not good enough or that we are not worthy of love and acceptance. This negative view of ourselves and our abilities frequently causes us to feel inadequate, incompetent, or unattractive. Consequently, we try to hide those parts of us that we don’t like or are ashamed of, and we attempt to fix our perceived imperfections by pursuing unrealistic standards that do not provide sustained satisfaction. This only fuels the painful cycle of inadequacy and self-doubt.

When you are beset with insecurities, your perception of yourself is distorted. You’re hyper-focused on how others perceive you and that it hinders your ability to connect with others. Over time, the image you are trying to portray offers little in substance and quality to a relationship. The lack of meaningful connections results in isolation and loneliness.

How Can I Manage Insecurities?

It is important to remember that everyone has insecurities. Many high achievers who have created a stable life for themselves can continue to have difficulty with insecurity. With time and effort, you can learn to gain a new sense of security and live a more confident and fulfilling life.

  • Seek therapy: A therapist can help you to understand the root of your insecurities and provide strategies so that you can continue to achieve the things you really desire in life and feel fulfilled.
  • Challenge yourself: Take chances to be your true self without concerns about how others will perceive you.
  • Be kind to yourself. Everyone makes mistakes. Treat yourself as you would kindly treat others in your life.
  • Set realistic goals. Prioritize what’s truly important to you and pursue goals that enable you to create authentic happiness.
