Transform Your Story: Overcome
Feeling Stuck

What Does it Means to Feel Stuck in Life?

Feeling stuck in life occurs when we get this overwhelming sense that life should be different than what it is. The level of difficulty we experience can magnify when we are also unsure of how to make our lives different and how to get there. When we believe that the life we are living is not the life we want, we can become unsettled with deep worry and frustration. This can either motivate us to find ways to get unstuck or it can hinder us from personal growth. If one is in stagnation for too long, it can leave the person feeling demoralized and hopeless as well as lead to physical and mental health problems.

The thing is, our lives are continuously evolving, and our values and goals may also change over time. So, feeling stuck from time to time is a natural life process, and it can be a good thing. It alerts us that we want change, and it prompts us to do something different. It may seem counterintuitive to embrace this notion—to view “stuckness” as serving a purpose. However, if we keep doing the same things whilst feeling unsatisfied, it can cause significant feelings of regret, resentment, and unhappiness.

Here are some of the potential reasons for feeling stuck include:

Fear of change

Change can be scary, and it's natural to want to avoid it. But if we're always afraid to change, we'll never grow or move forward.

Feeling like you're not living up to your potential

You may have goals that you've been wanting to achieve, but you're not sure how to get started. Or, you may have achieved many of your goals, but you're still not feeling fulfilled.

Feeling like you're in a rut

You feel like you’re on autopilot and doing the same things day in and day out. Even more discomforting, you're not sure how to break out of the cycle. You believe that you are not learning anymore or experiencing personal growth.

Feeling like you're not making a difference

You may feel like your work or your life doesn't have any meaning or purpose. In particular, you believe that you are not doing great things and making a difference in the world.

Unhealthy relationships

Your relationships with others can have a big impact on your sense of well-being. If you're constantly struggling in unhealthy relationships, it can be difficult to feel happy and fulfilled.

Feeling like you're alone

You may feel like you're the only one who is feeling stuck, and you don't have anyone to talk to about your feelings of stagnation.

Uncertainty about the future

When you don't know what the future holds, it can be easy to feel stuck. You may be afraid to take risks or make decisions because you don't know what the consequences will be.

A lack of purpose or direction

When you don't have a sense of purpose or direction in life, it can be easy to feel lost and unmotivated. You may not know what you want to achieve or where you want to go.

Critical self-talk

The way you talk to yourself has a big impact on how you feel about yourself and your life. If you're constantly critical of yourself, it's easy to feel disheartened, stuck and hopeless.

Past trauma

Past trauma can also prevent you from moving forward in life. If you’re not dealing with trauma in a healthy way, it can keep you stuck in a cycle of pain and suffering.

When Does Feeling Stuck Become a Problem

Feeling stuck can become a problem when it starts to interfere with your life, work, or relationship(s) and it causes you distress. Here are common signs to look for:

  • You're having trouble making decisions. You may find yourself having difficulty making even small decisions, such as what to eat for breakfast or what to wear.
  • You're avoiding activities that you used to enjoy. You may find yourself avoiding activities that you used to find joy in, such as spending time with friends or going out on dates.
  • You're feeling anxious or depressed. Feeling stuck can lead to feelings of anxiety and depression. You may find yourself feeling restless, irritable, or hopeless.
  • You're having trouble sleeping or concentrating. Feeling stuck can also interfere with your sleep and concentration. You may find yourself having trouble falling asleep or staying asleep, or you may find it difficult to focus on tasks at work or in other areas of your life.

Do High Achievers Feel Stuck?

There’s a general assumption that high achievers rarely feel stuck in life. Perhaps it's because on the outside, high achievers seem to have “everything.” But in fact, high achievers may be more likely to feel stuck than people who do not identify as high achieving. This is because high achievers often set very high standards for themselves, and they may feel like they are never good enough. They may also believe that they must keep achieving in order to be successful, and this can lead to stress and burnout. Here are a few reasons why high achieving people might feel stuck in life.

They may have achieved all of their goals and are unsure of what to do next

When you've been working towards a goal for a long time, it can be hard to know what to do when you finally achieve it. You may feel like you've lost your sense of purpose or direction.

They may be comparing themselves to others and feeling like they're not good enough

High achieving people are often very competitive and driven. They may compare themselves to others who are similar or more successful than they are and believe that they don’t measure up. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and stagnation.

They may be feeling high stress and burnout

High achieving people often put a lot of pressure on themselves to succeed. This can lead to burnout, which is a state of physical, emotional, and mental exhaustion. When you're burnt out, it can be difficult to focus, make decisions, or feel motivated.

They may be struggling with anxiety or depression

Anxiety and depression are common mental health conditions that can affect anyone, regardless of their level of achievement. If you're struggling with anxiety or depression, it can be difficult to feel motivated or engaged in life.

How Can High Achievers Become Unstuck in Life?

Identify the reasons why you feel stuck

Once you know what's holding you back, you can start to address it.

Take some time to reflect on your goals and values

What do you value in life? What are you really passionate about? What are your priorities? Once you have greater clarity of your values, you can start to make a plan for moving forward.

Set some new goals aligned to your values

If you've achieved all of your current goals, it's time to set some different ones. New goals that reflect your values and priorities will re-energize you and bring you greater satisfaction in life.

Take small steps

Our fears can hold us back from making changes. When you are ready to unravel from your feelings of “stuckness,” start by making small changes that you can stick with. Don't try to change everything overnight.

Be patient with yourself

Change takes time. Don't get discouraged if you don't see results immediately.

Focus on your own progress, rather than others

It's easy to get caught up in comparing yourself to others, but this is a surefire way to feel stuck. Instead, focus on your own progress and achievements.

Prioritize wellness

Make sure you're getting enough sleep, eating healthy foods, and exercising regularly. Taking care of your physical and mental health will help you feel better, feel more capable, and become more motivated.

Celebrate your successes

We are often our own worst critic, and it’s easy to be hard on yourself especially when you're feeling stuck. But remember, everyone goes through tough times. Be compassionate with yourself and don't give up.

Be kind to yourself

Even if they're small, take the time to celebrate your successes. This will help you stay focused, motivated, and on track.

Seek professional help if needed

If you're struggling with anxiety, depression, or burnout, don't hesitate to seek professional help. A therapist can help you understand your feelings, develop coping mechanisms and help you break free from the cycle of feeling stuck. You can work together to cultivate curiosity and courage to pursue the kind of change you want.

Moving forward can be difficult, but it's important to remember that you're not alone. There are many people who have felt stuck in life and have gone on to achieve meaningful experiences and fulfillment. With time, effort, and support, you can too.
