Transform Your Story: Overcome
Imposter Syndrome as a Leader

What is Imposter Syndrome?

Imposter syndrome is a psychological phenomenon in which people doubt their accomplishments and abilities, despite evidence to the contrary. People with imposter syndrome often feel like they are frauds, and they may worry that they will be exposed as a phony at any moment. Imposterism is a very common experience. Studies have shown that the majority of people will experience it at some point in their lives. High achievers are especially prone to imposter syndrome because they are often driven to succeed and to achieve high levels of performance.

What causes Imposter Syndrome in High Achievers?

Rather than acknowledging their personal capabilities and efforts, people struggling with imposter syndrome typically downplay or attribute their accomplishments to external reasons (i.e., right timing or good luck). It’s not necessarily that they can’t see their successes or what they are good at, but it’s that they don’t focus on it enough. Instead, the pressures they place on themselves hold most of their attention. It is likely that people who battle with feelings of imposterism faced immense pressure throughout their lives. For instance, those who were frequently criticized or neglected by their parents or others tend to develop low self-esteem and a sense of not being good enough. As a result, they often doubt or question their abilities. Additionally, people raised with high expectations may continue to feel like they must live up to unrealistic standards, and they tend to be extremely afraid of failing. Likewise, those that were constantly compared to siblings or peers can feel like they don’t measure up and consequently develop a sense of inadequacy. These assumptions and feelings typically lead to imposter syndrome. Attempts to resolve the anguish that comes with imposterism drive them to quell the pain by pushing their limits to prove their worth.

What Triggers Imposter Syndrome?

Emphasis on success, being in a competitive environment, or dealing with criticism can elicit overwhelming concern and stress for people struggling with imposter syndrome. This is because they are especially critical of themselves and focus on their inadequate feelings in these particular situations. The result of fixating on perceived weaknesses only magnifies their feelings of inadequacy, self-doubt and anxiety; It’s a sure-fire way to activate imposter syndrome. Triggering situations could include earning a promotion, receiving an award, or observing others as they also gain high recognition. Rather than reveling in the accomplishments, their celebration tends to be short lived. The pressures they place on themselves stir up questions about how they can “do better,” and it hooks them in a seemingly endless loop of needing to prove themselves.

How to Overcome Imposter Syndrome

There are several things that high achievers can do to overcome imposter syndrome, including:

Investigate and challenge the mindset

Recognize when you are being self critical and write those critical or self-doubting thoughts where you can see them. Then, identify how those thoughts make you feel (e.g., anxious, disappointed or inadequate). Studies show that when you label how you feel, you give your brain a chance to manage it more effectively. For instance, if you notice yourself feeling overwhelmed with anxiety, pause and take several deep breaths to send signals to your brain to calm down. Once you feel calmer, challenge the critical internal dialogue (or thoughts) you noted. It’s important to mention that this is not the same as stating positive affirmations. Rather, ask yourself if there is any evidence to support your doubtful thoughts and remind yourself of your abilities by identifying concrete accomplishments.

Focus on your strengths

Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. When you focus on your strengths, you give yourself the opportunity to see yourself realistically and to utilize your strengths to boost your self-confidence.

Set realistic goals

Creating unrealistic goals can set you for failure and lead to feelings of inadequacy. Set goals that are challenging but achievable. Also allow yourself the latitude to make mistakes, particularly at the beginning of new experiences.

Celebrate your successes

When you achieve a goal, take the time to celebrate your success. When you celebrate your successes, you are essentially telling yourself that you are capable and worthy of achieving great things. Avoid minimizing your accomplishments by comparing yourself to others, selling yourself short and being critical of yourself.

Seek support

Talk to a therapist or others who can understand insecurity and help you develop coping strategies to manage your feelings of imposter syndrome.

Imposter syndrome (feeling like we are faking it) happens to most of us. When it occurs, be kind to yourself, relinquish judgment and redefine assumptions to combat it. Doing so creates opportunities to focus on meaningful experiences that can actually facilitate self-growth and achievement of your full potential.
