What is Motivational Interviewing?
Motivational interviewing (MI) is a counseling approach that acknowledges how difficult the process of change is and helps people to resolve ambivalence about changing their behavior (e.g., career, exercising, strained relationships). Based on the principles of self-determination and acceptance, MI is a non-judgmental, collaborative modality that focuses on assisting people explore why and how they might change for themselves.
MI is a brief, time-limited approach to counseling. It typically involves 4-12 sessions. For people who are not ready to commit to change, therapists will help them navigate the stages of change.
What are the 5 stages of change?
1. Precontemplation
In this stage, the person is not aware that they have a problem or is not ready to change. They may deny that there is a problem or may be unwilling to change.
2. Contemplation
In this stage, the person is aware that they have a problem and is thinking about changing. They may weigh the pros and cons of changing and may be considering making a change in the near future.
3. Preparation
In this stage, the person is ready to make a change and is planning how to do so. They may set goals, make a plan, or start taking small steps towards change.
4. Action
In this stage, the person is making changes in their behavior. They may be working on breaking bad habits or developing new, healthier habits.
5. Maintenance
In this stage, the person is working to keep their changes in place. They may be facing challenges and may need to make adjustments to their plan.
It is important to note that an individual may move back and forth between stages. For example, someone who is in the action stage may have a setback and return to the contemplation stage. It is also important to remember that there is no right or wrong way to go through the stages of change. Everyone's journey is different.
Motivational Interviewing Treatment Approach
MI therapists apply 4 core principles:
Expressing empathy
This involves active listening to understand what works and what doesn’t work for the client without any judgment. It is important to deeply understand the client's perspective and to avoid imposing the therapist’s own values or beliefs. Be respectful of the client's right to choose.
Developing discrepancy
Using therapeutic paradox, the therapist helps the client to see the discrepancy between their current behavior and their goals. The therapist facilitates self-exploration regarding the negative consequences of their current behavior and the positive benefits of both staying the same and changing.
Rolling with resistance
This involves accepting the client's resistance to change without arguing or trying to convince them. The therapist embraces the fact that uncertainty and resistance to change are normal parts of the change process. The therapist works in collaboration with the client to help stimulate the desire for change and to keep the momentum for motivation moving forward.
Supporting self-efficacy
This involves empowering the client to believe that they are capable of change. The therapist fosters examination of the individual's past successes and supports them in optimizing their strengths and resources.
Tips for Achieving Success from Motivational Interviewing
Here are some additional tips for people who are considering MI:
Find a therapist who is experienced in Motivational Interviewing
Motivational Interviewing is an evidence-psychotherapeutic approach. This modality focuses on engaging, encouraging and facilitating intrinsic motivation within the individual in order to promote behavior change, so finding a therapist who is a good listener, empathetic, and supportive is essential. Therapists using MI are required to receive formal supervision and training to provide this form of treatment, so it is important to find a therapist who is experienced in using it.
Be willing to be open-minded
MI understands and assumes that people start therapy with different levels of readiness and commitment to change. You may be in therapy, but still have mixed feelings about doing things differently. Even if you are not ready to change, be willing to explore your thoughts, feelings and experiences and decide how you would like to move forward.
Be Patient
If you are ambivalent about making a change in your life, then motivational interviewing can help you decide if change is what you really want. MI is often used in conjunction with other treatment modalities to help you change when you are ready.
If you are willing to put in the work, MI can be a helpful therapy for people who are struggling with behavior change.
