Relationship Decisions

How Do Your Relationship Decisions Affect Your Mental Health?

Due to the emotional nature of relationships, the types of decisions that are made between you and your partner, including how they are made, can significantly impact you and your partner’s mental health. For example, it’s not uncommon for people to overstay a relationship because leaving a relationship (even if it’s unfulfilling) can be too difficult or scary. The very thought and desire of breaking-up can incite fear and insecurities that we may end-up resigning to stay in the relationship, but disengage (not allocating the effort and energy required) with our partner. Consequently, this decision can create more conflict and tension in the relationship causing hurt and dissatisfaction for both people. Without intentional actions that foster thriving relationships, the quality of it erodes overtime, leaving us feeling angry, misunderstood, empty and lonely.

Selecting a compatible partner that is aligned to your values can contribute positively to mental health, fostering feelings of love, security, and companionship. Conversely, settling for an unsuitable partner or staying in a toxic relationship can lead to anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem. With that said, even the most compatible relationships can be challenging to navigate and nurture without the proper “know-how.” Relationship factors such as emotional investment, support and stress can affect our well-being.

Common Relationship Decisions High Achievers Have Issues With

High achievers often face unique challenges in their relationships due to their ambitious nature, intense focus on goals, and demanding schedules. As a result, they may prioritize their careers or goals over personal relationships, leading to imbalance and neglect in their romantic lives. This can cause strain in their relationships and leave them feeling unfulfilled.

High achievers are accustomed to being in control and achieving success. As a result, they may find it challenging to express vulnerability or rely on others in their relationships. This fear of vulnerability can hinder emotional intimacy and connection with your partners. Similarly, there may be a fear of failure or rejection that leads to a lack of vulnerability and ability to open up to others. Practicing vulnerability in a comfortable and safe relationship can enhance it.

High achievers tend to set high standards for themselves and others. In relationships, you may expect your partners to match their level of ambition, drive, and success, which may be unrealistic for your partner. These unrealistic expectations can lead to disappointment and frustration on your part when your partners fail to meet these standards. Working through these emotions so that you don’t place unrealistic expectations on others can lead to more positive relationships.

Addressing these challenges requires high achievers to develop self-awareness, prioritize their relationships, practice vulnerability and develop effective communication and boundary-setting skills. These are all skills that can be honed and developed by working with a clinical psychologist.

How to Cultivate a Healthy and Thriving Relationship

Cultivating a healthy and thriving relationship takes work and the commitment from both partners. Here are some key aspects to nurture:

Effective Communication

Effective communication is essential to any healthy relationship. Being able to be open and honest fosters trust and understanding between the two of you. Effective communication can reduce misunderstandings and conflicts that can negatively impact your mental health and other interpersonal relationships you may have, such as social or work relationships. Conversely, poor communication can lead to resentment, frustration, and feelings of isolation.

Practice active listening, where you pay full attention to your partner and try to understand their perspective. Be authentic and vulnerable by communicating openly and honestly about your

Trust and Respect

Trust is built through honesty, reliability, and keeping your word. Respect your partner's opinions, boundaries, and feelings, even if you don't always agree.

Support

Practice empathy and be each other's cheerleader. Celebrate each other's successes and offer encouragement during tough times.

Quality Time

Be present and dedicate time for meaningful connection with your partner, free from distractions. This can be anything from having regular date nights to simply enjoying shared hobbies. Keep your partner’s “bucket full.” Be playful and maintain a sense of fun and humor in your relationship.

Healthy Boundaries

Establishing and respecting boundaries is absolutely crucial for maintaining mental health in relationships. Clear, healthy boundaries will help you feel safe and respected, and prevent feelings of being overwhelmed or violated. While ignoring boundaries can lead to resentment, conflict, and emotional distress.

It's also important to maintain a sense of individuality within the relationship. Having healthy boundaries allows you to maintain friendships, interests, and personal growth outside the relationship.

Conflict Resolution

Accept that disagreements are inevitable and aversive, and learn to communicate constructively during conflict. Focus on finding solutions together, rather than placing blame. Be willing to compromise. No relationship is 50/50 all the time. Be flexible and willing to meet your partner where they need and vice versa.

Appreciation

As humans we adapt, and it is easy to become complacent in a relationship. Express daily gratitude for your partner and the things they do for you. Small gestures of appreciation can go a long way in motivating your partner to reciprocate in kind and strengthening your bond together.

Shared Values

Having a solid foundation of shared values can provide a sense of unity and common purpose in your relationship.

Seek professional help

Overall, relationship decisions play a significant role in shaping mental health outcomes. Choosing healthy, supportive relationships and prioritizing effective communication and self-care can promote mental well-being; while, staying in unsatisfying and/or unhealthy relationships can have detrimental effects on mental health. If you're struggling to communicate or navigate challenges in your relationship, consider seeking professional help from a psychologist. They are able to help you work through commitment concerns or insecurities that you may be feeling. They can also be your support through decision making processes as well guide you towards taking action to secure and cultivate the type of partnership you want.
