Counseling to Improve Self Worth in Person and Online
Transform Your Story: Improve Your
Self-Worth
Why is Self-Worth Important?
Self-worth is believing you're good enough just as you are and not basing it on your accomplishments or how others see you. Our self-worth is shaped over time and can influence how we deal with life and other people. It can be easy to tie our self-worth to extrinsic things in life, leading us to base our self-worth on material and external factors such as money and achievements. When we measure our self-worth by these aspects, we tend to lose sight of the intrinsic value that every individual has. These intrinsic values include your own beliefs, attitudes and feelings about yourself. Self-worth can encompass your own perceptions of self-competence, likeability and deservingness of love, respect and kindness, and it often drives how we approach life. For example, a person who feels inadequate may work hard to prove their worth. When you base your self-worth on things such as achievements, possessions, or social validation, your sense of value becomes unstable. A social snub, 2nd place, or lack of acknowledgement can send your self-esteem plummeting. Having a healthy sense of who you are and your values are keys to overall well-being. After all, self-worth can influence things like confidence, relationships and mental health.
What Are Some Reasons a High Achiever Has Low Self-Worth?
High achievers can struggle with self-compassion. It is hard to cultivate self-compassion when we are extremely hard on ourselves, and the drive for success can sometimes create obstacles to developing self-compassion. Here's are some reasons:
Focus on achievement
High achievers often prioritize accomplishment and attaining goals. This relentless drive can lead to harsh self-criticism when they fall short, hindering self-compassion which emphasizes understanding and kindness towards oneself.
Fear of failure
The pressure to succeed can make high achievers fearful of making mistakes. This fear can make them view setbacks as personal failings rather than learning opportunities, reducing the space for self-compassion.
Self-esteem vs. self-compassion
Some high achievers might rely on self-esteem, which is based on accomplishments, for their sense of worth. Self-compassion, on the other hand, is about inherent worth regardless of achievements. Focus on external validation can make it harder to cultivate self-compassion.
Negative self-talk
The pressure to perform can lead to a critical self-talk that constantly judges and belittles. This negativity makes it difficult to be kind and understanding towards oneself.
How Can High Achievers Improve Their Self-Worth?
Why is self-compassion such a big deal? It can actually benefit high achiever::
Increased resilience
Self-compassion allows high achievers to bounce back from setbacks more easily. When take a growth mindset and view mistakes as learning experiences, they're less likely to get discouraged and give up.
Reduced stress and burnout
The constant pressure to succeed can be draining. Self-compassion encourages self-care and reduces stress, allowing high achievers to maintain their motivation and focus.
Improved performance
By being kinder to themselves, high achievers can release themselves from the burden of self-criticism. This allows them to focus their energy on improvement and achieving their goals.
So, while there can be challenges for high achievers to develop self-compassion, it's actually a valuable tool for their success and well-being. Here’s some tips on how to increase your level of self-worth:
Cultivate and practice self-compassion
Self-compassion requires recognizing the fundamental quality of being human and aiming to cultivate a sense of care and support for yourself. Before delving into self-compassion, let’s first distinguish self-compassion from self-pity. Self-pity involves dwelling on your problems and feeling like a victim. Whereas, self-compassion involves acknowledging your struggles but fostering a sense of self-care and growth. Being self-compassionate is not self-pity! Allowing yourself to embrace the true definition of self-compassion and practicing it can be life-changing.
There are three key components to developing greater self-compassion:
- Self-kindness: This involves being gentle with yourself instead of judgmental. Imagine talking to a friend going through a tough time – you'd likely offer encouragement and support, right? Apply that same kindness to yourself.
- Common humanity: Recognizing that suffering and imperfection are part of the shared human experience. Everyone makes mistakes, feels down sometimes, and faces challenges. You're not alone in this.
- Mindfulness: Being aware of your thoughts and feelings without judgment. This allows you to acknowledge your pain without getting swept away by negativity.
Positive Psychology
Positive psychology can be a powerful tool to help increase your self-worth and self-value, leading you to focus on the creativity and enjoyment you get out of life. Positive psychology was developed on the idea that as we get to know ourselves and our connected values, we become happier beings.
