Transform Your Story: Improve Your
Self-Confidence
What Are Some Reasons a High Achiever Has Low Confidence?
It might be surprising, but high achievers can struggle with their self-confidence regardless of the amount of success experienced with work, networth or status. Confidence allows you to have a sense of security and self-assurance. You feel comfortable in your own skin and don't need constant validation from others. It is typically developed with successful experiences throughout our lives, and it is quite normal for all of us to struggle with our level of confidence in varying parts of our lives from time to time. Seemingly confident people may be able to mask their worries for a while, but eventually persistent low self confidence can affect their lives.
People who are struggling with confidence often engage in negative self-talk. They are afraid of failing, so they may avoid challenges or new experiences. They may even set low goals to mitigate disappointment. Additionally, they may be people-pleasers, overly sensitive to criticism, and perfectionistic. Furthermore, they may second-guess themselves, feel envious of others, feel uncomfortable or insecure with others or in social situations and avoid certain activities because of self-doubt.
It’s essential to understand:
Success does not always mean confidence
Recognizing low self-confidence can be difficult, especially when you have placed so much value and emphasis on material successes and achievements. Some high achievers may even believe that they are confident, but internally have many self-doubts about themselves.
Strive for excellence, not perfectionism
High achievers will often set extremely high standards for themselves. This might look like unrealistic goals that result in feelings of under-achievement and even failure. Perfectionistic people may view setbacks or mistakes as absolute failure which can lead to feelings of inadequacy. Remember, you can strive to do excellent work, but striving for flawlessness will leave you constantly feeling frustrated and disappointed.
Imposter syndrome
Imposter syndrome occurs when you doubt your accomplishments and feel like a fraud, despite clear evidence of your success. If it is persistent, it can be quite debilitating to your self-confidence.
Result driven
High achievers who tie their self-worth strictly on outcomes are missing the bigger picture, especially if the outcome is tied to unrealistic expectations.
How Can High Achievers Improve Their Self-Confidence?
Everyone second guesses themselves and experiences self-doubt; in fact, it would be questionable if you didn’t. It is important to remember that we are all human and doubt is a normal human experience. Confidence will often increase and decrease in waves, and even vary based on situations and contexts.
Identify your strengths
Exploring your own strengths is a crucial part in identifying your own levels of confidence. On the other hand, being able to identify areas in which you can improve, will increase your resilience and perseverance to change and obstacles.
Resilience
Resilience and self-confidence go hand in hand, building on each other to create a positive cycle When you're resilient, you view challenges and failures as opportunities to learn and grow. This prevents setbacks from derailing your confidence. You bounce back stronger, knowing you have the ability to overcome obstacles.
Process oriented
High achievers who embrace the process and begin to enjoy the small wins along the way are more likely to have a higher level of self-confidence and a stronger sense of identity. Self-confidence will come from realizing that you were able to “control the controllables” with your best effort, regardless of the outcome.
