Transform Your Story: Overcome
Challenges with Success

What Types of Challenges do Successful People Face?

Successful, high achieving individuals are often put on pedestals by others, even the ones closest to them. Frequently, people assume that they already have everything and shouldn't have any problems, which in itself makes any problems they are facing that much more difficult to deal with.

People who strive to continually achieve and succeed often have qualities of perfectionism, competitiveness and hyper-focus which frequently contribute to their success. However, these traits on a more extreme level can also be detrimental to well-being and mental health– as these individuals end-up placing undue pressure on themselves.

Why are Some Successful People Not Happy?

Many successful individuals find great fulfillment and joy in their achievements and contributions. However, these individuals are not immune to unhappiness, stress, or even failure. We ALL deal with life problems such as health issues, relationship problems, insecurities, or loss and grief. Many successful people find that their status either magnifies their problems or creates additional problems, which few understand or empathize with. This often leads to isolation, loneliness, anxiety and sadness. The challenges you encounter are often compounded by guilt and embarrassment, as you suffer from stigmas and false perception that wealth is supposed to make you happier. However, there is no amount of wealth or external attainment that exonerates us from life struggle and varying pain we will feel in life. It cannot replace our internal desire for love, connection, appreciation, acceptance, and emotional wellness.

It is critical to understand that happiness is not an end goal or the epitome of being successful. Human happiness is an emotion, therefore a transient state. There are some successful and wealthy people that often expect endless happiness and fulfillment when they achieve monetary or career success. While these can be helpful in creating happiness, it is important to remember that success does not equate to happiness or satisfaction.

Factors that can contribute to unhappiness even amidst success:

The Hedonic treadmill

Our brains are wired to seek rewards and adjust to new situations. So, the happiness boost from achieving a goal may be temporary. Once we reach a certain level of success, we quickly adapt and start chasing the next big thing, never feeling truly satisfied.
For example, when your long term goal is achieved, you start a new relationship, or earn a promotion at work, you may experience a brief burst of joy. This feeling of happiness and pleasure tends to be fleeting, as you adjust to this new experience and gradually stop appreciating these things over time. As part of the hedonic treadmill, you expect something different or more to maintain that same level of joy you felt. Nevertheless, staying on the hedonic treadmill can make you feel stuck. Not knowing how to move forward can lead to feelings of confusion, distress, disorientation, anxiety and depression.

Expectation of what defines success and happiness

What constitutes "success" or “happiness” is subjective and can evolve over time. Someone who achieves their initial goals may feel lost or unfulfilled if they haven't redefined what success and/or happiness means for them in their current stage of life.

Pressure and sacrifice

The path to success often involves sacrifice and pressure, which can take a toll on your mental, emotional and physical well-being. Long hours, demanding schedules, and constant competition can lead to stress, burnout, and feelings of isolation. Constantly having to perform at a high level can be stressful and unsustainable.

Fear of failure

Fear of failure can also burden successful individuals. While a healthy dose of fear can be a motivator, higher levels of consistent fear is exhausting and unsustainable. These fears can go unaddressed and suppressed many times, as it is often unrealistically associated with signs of weakness.

Comparison traps

Comparing oneself to others who seem even more successful can breed dissatisfaction and insecurity. Social media and information showcasing only the highlights of people’s lives, can only serve to initiate and exacerbate feelings of inadequacy, anxiety and depression.

Meaning and purpose

Success itself doesn't guarantee a sense of meaning or purpose. If achievements are disconnected from deeper values and contributions to something larger than oneself, it can lead to emptiness and a lack of fulfillment.

How to Overcome Challenges of Success and Experience Fulfillment

It's crucial to remember that happiness is complex and influenced by various factors beyond just achievement. Overall focus on healthy habits, cultivating meaningful relationships, and pursuing goals aligned with personal values can help individuals achieve success and fulfillment simultaneously.

Here are some ways to achieve success and fulfillment simultaneously:

Redefine success and happiness

  • Shift the focus: The words “success” and “happiness” are subjective. Expand external markers like wealth or fame and define success for yourself based on your values and aspirations. What truly brings you meaning and purpose? Additionally, develop a realistic and healthy view and expectation of “happiness.”
  • Set continuous goals:Be aware and avoid the "hedonic treadmill" by chasing one big goal after another. Set smaller, meaningful goals that contribute to your overall vision and provide ongoing motivation.
  • Celebrate the journey: Acknowledge and appreciate your progress along the way, not just the end goal. Savor small wins and milestones to maintain a positive outlook. One of the most important aspects of goal setting and motivation is finding the joy in the process, not the outcome. While outcome oriented goals can be helpful, process planning and process oriented goals are the most effective way to motivate and create change and growth.

Manage Expectations:

  • Embrace imperfection: Striving for perfection can be paralyzing and lead to dissatisfaction. Give yourself the latitude to make mistakes and to have setbacks as they are inevitable parts of growth. Learn from them and move forward with that much more know-how and experience.
  • Compare wisely: It is normal to compare ourselves with others from time to time. However, focusing on someone else's strengths while neglecting your own can be hurtful and lead to feelings of inadequacy and self-doubt. In our time with social media, people often portray an idealized version of their lives, which can be misleading and exacerbate your feelings of inadequacy. Avoid comparing your behind-the-scenes reality to someone else's carefully curated online persona. Rather, focus on your own unique journey and personal growth.
  • Practice gratitude: Shift your focus to what you already have and practice appreciation daily. Gratitude fosters a sense of contentment and helps you savor your achievements.

Cultivate Well-being:

  • Maintain healthy habits: Prioritize physical and mental health through exercise, healthy eating, sleep, and relaxation techniques. A healthy body and mind fuel your ability to cope with challenges.
  • Build strong relationships: Nurture connections with loved ones who support and encourage you. Having a strong social network provides a sense of belonging and reduces stress.
  • Give back to others: Helping others can add meaning and purpose to your life. Find causes you care about and volunteer your time or resources.
  • Seek professional help: If you struggle with persistent negative thoughts or find it difficult to cope, don't hesitate to seek help from a therapist or counselor. They can provide guidance and support in navigating your challenges.

Remember, achieving, lasting fulfillment is an ongoing journey, not a destination. By continuously reflecting, adapting, and taking care of yourself, you can navigate the challenges of success and experience a more meaningful and fulfilling life.
