Transform Your Story: Lead Your Life Authentically
What is Authenticity?
The word “authenticity” has been widely used and viewed as an ideal way of being. However, it is a complex concept that has not necessarily been easily defined and seemingly harder to attain.
In their extensive research and work in this area, psychologists Drs. Michael Kernis and Brian Goldman identified four key components of authenticity:
1. Self-awareness
This is having knowledge of and trust in your own motives, emotions, preferences, and abilities. As a central component of authenticity, self-awareness also plays a part in the next three components.
2. Unbiased processing
This refers to your ability to clearly evaluate and acknowledge your strengths and weaknesses, without denying reality or placing blame on others.
3. Behavior
This is acting in ways congruent with your own values and needs, even at the risk of criticism or rejection.
4. Relational orientation
This is having openness and honesty in relationships. These two factors are necessary for close relationships, because intimacy cannot be developed without them.
When we are authentic, we aren’t pretending to be someone we are not. Authentic people do not try to hide parts of themselves they don’t like; They have learned to feel comfortable revealing who they truly are—”warts and all.” This doesn’t mean that they don’t care if others don’t like them, rather they see themselves realistically-- a human being who is “perfectly imperfect,” and they value openness and honesty. It means that they are willing to share both their strengths and vulnerabilities with others. When people can show themselves genuinely, they are much more relatable and likable. As a result, they can build relationships and connect with others on a deeper level. Additionally, this approach allows them to bounce back from challenges easier than others because they accept that they will inevitably face difficulties in life. Consequently, they are more likely to deal with their problems head-on.
Authentic people tend to have a sense of purpose and meaning in life, and they live in accordance with the things that are most important to them.
Why is Authenticity Important in Leadership?
Authenticity is essential for effective leadership. Here are some benefits:
Trust
When leaders are genuine and honest, they are more likely to be trusted by those they work with. Trust is essential for effective leadership, as it allows leaders to build relationships with their colleagues and stakeholders and work together towards common goals.
Credibility
When leaders are authentic, they are more likely to be seen as being knowledgeable and capable. Credibility is important for leadership, as it allows leaders to make decisions that are respected and supported.
Motivation
Authentic leaders inspire and support others toward achievement and success. This can stimulate and maintain motivation, even during challenging times.
Engagement
When leaders are authentic, they are more likely to engage others in meaningful conversations and to get them involved in the decision-making process. This can lead to a positive, more productive and motivated work environment.
Sustainability
A positive and productive work environment leads to a more sustainable organization that is able to attract and retain top talent.
What Does Authenticity Look Like as a Leader in the Workplace?
Authentic leaders have common characteristics and behaviors. Here are a few:
Honest and transparent
Authentic leaders are honest with their employees about their goals, their plans, and their mistakes. They are also transparent about their decision-making process.
Vulnerability
They are willing to show their weaknesses and their vulnerabilities to their colleagues and stakeholders. This helps to build trust and rapport.
Open to feedback
Authentic leaders are humble. They are open to feedback from others. They are willing to listen to constructive criticism and to use it to improve their leadership skills.
Fair and consistent
Authentic leaders are fair and consistent in their approach. They treat everyone with respect, regardless of their position or title.
Passionate about their work
They are excited about the future of their profession and organization, and they are eager to help others succeed as well.
Willing to take risks
Authentic leaders are courageous and willing to take risks. They are willing to try new things and to challenge the status quo.
Here are some additional actions authentic leaders take:
- Engages in introspection
- Admits that they made a mistake and apologizes to their team.
- Share their personal experiences with their team to help them connect with them on a deeper level.
- Asks for help from their team when they need it.
- Celebrates the successes of their team members, both big and small.
- “Rolls their sleeves up” and joins in
- Hold realistic views and expectation
- Values and strives to understand those they work with
- Communicates their emotions clearly
Cultivating authenticity is an ongoing process and requires considerable effort, practice and courage. When leaders are authentic, they create a more positive and productive work environment. Others are more likely to trust and respect their leaders, which can lead to increased engagement, productivity, and innovation.
